Celebrating one of Cambodia’s most celebrated living artists, Rosewood Phnom Penh is pleased to unveil Nou Sary’s latest collection, “Market”, as part of an insightful retrospective that showcases two decades of the artist’s work.
As part of its commitment to supporting Cambodia’s local arts and creative industries, Rosewood Phnom Penh is pleased to present ‘A Journey with Nou Sary’ from September 26, 2021, to January 26, 2022. Known as one of Cambodia’s finest painters and sculptors, Sary recently completed a new series, “Market”, which will debut at this highly anticipated exhibition alongside two decades of the artist’s work.
Curated by Madeleine de Langalerie and Jean Morel of RE-CREATION gallery, the collection showcases 20 impressionist paintings and four sculptures – each of which invites guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of Cambodia, from nature and rural scenery to the everyday experiences of farmers, monks, and women.
“It’s nature that gives us fruit and meat which keep us alive,” writes Sary in his artist’s statement. “Then [at death] we melt with the earth, and out of this grow plants and trees: We can’t disassociate ourselves from nature.”
Born into a rice farming family in the Kandal Province of Cambodia in 1971, Sary knew he wanted to be an artist from a young age. He studied at the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh from 1994-2000 before moving to France to refine his techniques at the Saint-Etienne School of Fine Arts from 2001-2006.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Sary has worked with everything from painting to engravings, illustration, photography, installations, and sculpture. He recently catapulted to the world stage with his “Harvest” painting collection, depicting Cambodian farmers working in the harvest season.
Rosewood Phnom Penh’s fascinating retrospective will showcase artwork from the past 20 years, so visitors can observe Sary’s evolution over time. In his new impressionist painting collection, “Market”, for instance, the artist celebrates the life, colors, and energy of the country’s traditional open-air bazaars. Meanwhile, Sary’s latest sculptures showcase beautiful textures, natural materials, and fabrics to depict the life and work of everyday Cambodians.

Rosewood Phnom Penh Art Gallery is located on the hotel’s 35th floor and is open 24 hours daily. ‘A Journey with Nou Sary’ will be open to the public from September 26, 2021, to January 26, 2022.
