The 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR would be held on the theme “One Health – Advancing Global AMR Commitments through Local Action” from 28th to 30th June 2026, in which high-level delegations from over 100 countries are expected to participate along with presidents of a few countries, such as Botswana, Ghana and Nigeria, said Dr Ayoade Alakija, Ministerial Global Envoy on AMR, Government of Nigeria. The Honourable President of Nigeria, His Excellency Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would host the welcome before this meeting opens in Abuja.

“AMR is a big threat and continues to kill many people, especially in LMICs and the Global South,” said Dr Jean-Pierre Nyemazi, Director of the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR. AMR is among the top 10 global health threats and threatens our animals, food systems, economies, and environment. All quadripartite agencies are supporting the upcoming high-level ministerial meeting on AMR in Nigeria, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Environment Programme, and World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

Dr Nyemazi and Dr Alakija were addressing an exclusive Global Media Briefing organised by the Global AMR Media Alliance (GAMA) ahead of the 5th High-Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR.

“AMR, or drug resistance, is a problem driven by misuse and overuse of antimicrobial medicines – including antibiotics, antivirals, antiparasitics and antifungals – and results in critical medicines losing effectiveness to treat infections. As a result of drug resistance, medicines become ineffective, and infections become increasingly difficult or impossible to treat. ‘Misuse and overuse of medicines is rampant in animal health and livestock, food and agriculture, and human health, as well as polluting our environment,’ said Shobha Shukla, Chairperson, Global AMR Media Alliance (GAMA).

Upcoming global AMR Ministerial Meet to accelerate implementation of multisectoral national action plans

“The 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR is a key moment to carry forward the momentum from the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AMR 2024 – as well as to translate the political commitments made there into country-level delivery,” said Dr JP Nyemazi. “The upcoming meeting also builds upon the Jeddah commitments made at the 4th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR hosted by Saudi Arabia in 2024.”

“In Jeddah, we agreed on a Troika mechanism to keep continuity from one meeting to another. So, past discussions held at the 4th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR in Jeddah in 2024 are informing the organising of the 5th Meeting in Nigeria in 2026,” said Dr Nyemazi.

Agrees Dr Alakija, as the Troika mechanism is ensuring continuity and accountability as she spearheads the organising of the upcoming meeting in Abuja. Troika is helping institutionalise governance of AMR mechanisms across countries, regions and globally.

“The task for this upcoming 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR in Nigeria would be to enable the acceleration of implementation of multi-sectoral national action plans on AMR, enabled by effective governance at all levels, sustainable investment at all levels, and walking the talk on the theme of One Health for advancing global AMR commitments through local actions. Media is a strategic partner to inform, connect and hold us accountable,” said Dr Jean Pierre Nyemazi. “Evidence-based reporting ensures that AMR is visible as a development, equity and sustainability issue; it shapes the public understanding, support, and behaviour change, and sustains pressure for measurable progress.”

Dr Nyemazi said that if we review the 1st and 2nd High-Level Ministerial Meetings that took place in 2014 and 2019, mostly ministers from European regions attended them. Now, ministers of over 100 countries are expected to take part in the upcoming meeting in Nigeria – and the majority come from the Global South.

“We see the focus changing from health to one health – which means we are having more representation from ministries of animal health, food and agriculture, and environment along with human health. When we talk about AMR prevention, we are talking about preventing AMR across all the sectors (and not just in human health),” said Dr Nyemazi.

Reducing AMR deaths by 10% by 2030

“One of the targets of the Political Declaration adopted at the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting 2024 was to reduce AMR deaths by 10% by 2030 (compared to 4.9 million AMR-associated deaths recorded in 2019). Simple strategies that are cost-effective and impact public health, such as washing hands, can help. We also need to ensure equitable access to essential antimicrobials. These are a few steps governments can take now,” said Dr Nyemazi.

A multisectoral AMR response warrants engaging several ministries, and not just the MOH.

“The 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR would be different because not just ministers of health but also ministers of agriculture, environment and finance are being invited to take part to address AMR in all sectors (such as animal health and livestock, food and agriculture and our environment) – and not just human health,” said Dr Ayoade Alakija, Ministerial Global Envoy on AMR, Government of Nigeria.

“AMR is not just about human health and protecting just our medicines but also about prevention and protecting our animals, plants and environment. We need to ensure that not only humans are not harmed due to AMR but also our animals, agriculture and food systems and our environment are kept safe so that we all can live in harmony together,” said Dr Alakija.

“If we invest US$ 1 in AMR, then return-on-investment is 11 times.”

If we invest US$ 1 in AMR, the return on investment is US$ 11 – 11 times, says Dr Alakija. “This upcoming 5th High Level Meeting in Nigeria would focus more on solutions to address the challenge AMR is posing. We also need to ensure AMR response is fully financed, including prevention, surveillance, water, sanitation and hygiene. It is strategic investments that our countries and our communities need.”

“If we do not have money to fully fund our AMR multisectoral action plans, then how are we going to get the work done? So, we have to involve those who are involved with finances. Media is critical for accountability but also critical for awareness and keeping the communities we serve involved,” she added.

Dr Alakija referred to the Abuja Declaration 2001, where African countries committed to invest 15% of their annual budgets in health. She hopes that the upcoming meeting will also play a historic role in sustainable financing for AMR response.

“Earlier in April 2026, I was at the One Health Summit in Lyons, France, hosted by the president of France, Mr Emmanuel Macron, where many of the people at the highest level, who were present there, have confirmed their attendance (for an upcoming meeting in Nigeria),” said Dr Alakija.

“Nigeria has been involved with the integrated approach for a while, as it is important for all sectors to speak to one another and work in concert with one another. AMR has typically been seen often from the lens of high-income countries. We need to address AMR, recognising the gaps in all countries and contexts, especially low- and middle-income countries – and ways to bridge the gaps in prevention of infectious diseases as well as gaps in stopping misuse and overuse of medicines in the food and agriculture sectors, animal health sector and environment along with the human health sector,” said Dr Alakija. “AMR commitments like UNGA Political Declaration 2024 need to be translated into not just actions but local actions which are critical.”

“The 5th High-Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR itself is just a moment in time. The larger objective is to advance and to sustain global efforts to curb AMR in Nigeria, Africa and globally,” said Dr Alakija.

We need equitable AMR response

“All of us are at risk of AMR. But in the absence of strong public systems, those in low- and middle-income countries – and especially those who are underserved – are at a much-heightened risk of AMR. We have to do better in protecting the medicines that save us. We also have to do better in saving lives from preventable infections as well as ensuring the right and timely diagnosis and the right treatment, care and support for everyone, leaving no one behind,” said Shobha Shukla, Chairperson of Global AMR Media Alliance (GAMA).

Global AMR Media Awards 2026 launched

The 3rd edition of the Global AMR Media Awards 2026 was announced. Nigeria AMR Media Alliance (NAMA) Chairperson Ojoma Akor announced the 1st Nigeria AMR Media Awards 2026. Nepal AMR Media Alliance Chairperson Kalpana Acharya announced the 2nd Nepal AMR Media Awards 2026. Lata Mishra of India AMR Media Alliance announced the 2nd India AMR Media Awards 2026, and Dr Ijyaa Singh of ReAct Asia Pacific announced the 1st Kerala AMR Media Awards 2026.

2 special awards categories were announced: AMR survivor Vanessa Carter (founder of The AMR Narrative and chairperson of the WHO Task Force of AMR Survivors) announced the #PutPeopleFirst award category to shine a spotlight on media reporting featuring voices of AMR survivors. Likewise, a special award category is for media globally, which is reporting around the 5th High Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR in Nigeria. The opening will take place on Thursday, 2 April 2026, from 6:30 pm at the French Institute of Cambodia.

Initially conceived to celebrate 25 years of French architectural presence in Cambodia, the exhibition has gradually evolved into a broader perspective, in line with the values of the Francophonie: dialogue, diversity, and co-construction. In the lead-up to the Francophonie Summit, scheduled for November 2025 in Phnom Penh, Adaptation(s) highlights the ability of Francophone and Cambodian stakeholders to collaborate in addressing contemporary challenges—urban, environmental, and social.

The exhibition is structured around three main themes guiding the visitor’s journey:

Private and public spaces: how does contemporary Cambodian architecture negotiate the boundary between intimate and shared spaces? In Southeast Asia, thresholds expand, façades engage with the street, and collective space is shaped through use and proximity.

Preservation and reinvention of heritage: from Angkorian monuments to colonial architecture, including the modernist legacy of the Sangkum era and post-war constructions, these layers are not static relics but resources to be activated. Transforming, adapting, and reusing become both ecological and cultural acts.

Adaptation to climatic conditions: in a tropical climate, designing first means working with air, shade, rain, and materials. Architecture becomes a climatic device when it fully integrates these parameters, favoring contextual responses over technical accumulation.

To illustrate these themes, the gallery presents a variety of media: models, photographs, plans, and materials drawn from the projects of participating firms. The exhibition design, created by Melon Rouge Agency, offers an immersive and accessible experience for all audiences, inviting visitors to take a fresh look at both everyday buildings and landmark projects, revealing the invisible dynamics shaping our built environment.

“This exhibition was born from a simple desire: to showcase what is being built here in Cambodia by architects who design in constant dialogue with their environment. It is a conversation between cultures, heritages, and practices. In the perspective of the Francophonie Summit, adaptation(s) is a concrete illustration of our commitment: Franco-Cambodian cultural cooperation is not just a statement—it is a demanding and vibrant collective construction.” Fanny Pagès, deputy director of the French Institute of Cambodia and cultural attaché.

As with each exhibition, the French Institute of Cambodia offers a rich accompanying programme designed to broaden audiences and deepen the themes explored: guided tours for school groups and NGOs; roundtable discussions on the exhibition’s topics; as well as a film series on architecture, including a screening of the documentary Moriyama-San by Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine, followed by a discussion with architect Antoine Miennel (Bloom Architecture), scheduled for 30 May.

Phnom Penh: Oakwood Premier Phnom Penh successfully hosted its annual International Women’s Day celebration, “Women in White: Golden Era of New York Glamour,” on Friday, 6 March 2026. Together with One Park and the AmCham Cambodia Women’s Steering Committee, the evening brought together the business community, partners, media representatives, and distinguished guests to celebrate the strength, leadership, and impact of women while supporting an important humanitarian cause through World Vision.

The event welcomed around 300 registered guests, transforming the venue into an elegant gathering inspired by the glamour of New York’s golden era in the 1970s and 1980s. Dressed predominantly in white — a symbol of confidence, courage, and empowerment — attendees enjoyed a vibrant evening filled with connection, celebration, and meaningful purpose.

More than a celebration, Women in White served as a fundraising initiative in support of World Vision International, raising USD 2,740.60 to assist ongoing humanitarian efforts for families affected by the border conflict. Since the beginning of the crisis, World Vision has mobilized resources and initiatives to deliver emergency relief, safeguard children, and help communities rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.

Following the event, the funds were officially handed over to World Vision International to support these ongoing efforts, providing essential resources, protection, and renewed opportunities for vulnerable families—especially women and children.

The evening featured a thoughtfully curated program of entertainment, cultural performances, and interactive activities. Highlights included a captivating Chinese classical dance performance, adding a graceful cultural dimension to the celebration, alongside a lively Lucky Draw that brought moments of excitement throughout the night. One of the most anticipated segments—the Best Dressed of the Evening—captured the spirit of the theme, with three standout winners recognized for their elegance and creativity, energizing the entire room.

Adding a meaningful and emotional dimension to the evening, guests were invited to write handwritten letters of encouragement addressed to families—particularly women—living near the border areas affected by conflict.

PHNOM PENH: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in partnership with the Royal Government of Cambodia and with financial support from the Government of Japan, today launched a new initiative to improve nutrition among garment factory workers by expanding access to fortified rice.

With a contribution of USD1.5 million from the Government of Japan, the initiative is expected to reach more than 50,000 factory workers, employed in the garment and textile sectors, across 118 factories located in the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone and Royal Group Kandal Special Economic Zones over five years.

The project, titled “Breaking the Cycle of Malnutrition in Cambodia: Fortifying the Food Plate of Garment Factory Workers,” was officially launched at the Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone and aims to address micronutrient deficiencies and improve workers’ health and productivity.

“Japan is proud to support Cambodia in addressing malnutrition through practical and scalable solutions. By improving access to nutritious food for garment workers, this initiative contributes not only to better health outcomes but also to stronger communities and a more resilient economy,” said MATSUDA Junsaku, Counsellor, Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, reaffirming Japan’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable development.

Cambodia’s garment sector is a major driver of economic growth, employing hundreds of thousands of workers. However, many, particularly women, face high rates of malnutrition, including anaemia and other micronutrient deficiencies. Poor nutrition not only affects individual health and well-being but also affects productivity, income, and national development.

Through this initiative, WFP and partners will introduce fortified rice into factory meal programmes, ensuring workers receive essential vitamins and minerals through their daily diets. As rice is Cambodia’s primary staple food, fortification provides a practical andcost-effective way to improve nutrition without requiring changes to established eating habits.

The project will work closely with factory owners, food suppliers, and national stakeholders to:

integrate fortified rice into workplace meal programme systems

Strengthen supply chains and quality assurance for fortified foods

Build capacity among producers and millers

Raise awareness among workers on the benefits of improved nutrition.

“This project represents a crucial step toward improving the nutrition and well-being of Cambodia’s garment workers,” said Kyung-nan Park, WFP Representative and Country Director in Cambodia. “By integrating fortified rice into daily meals, we are helping workers access the nutrients they need to stay healthy, support their families, and contribute to Cambodia’s continued economic growth.”

H.E. Pan Buntheoun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Planning (MoP), highlighted the government’s support for the initiative: “This project exemplifies our commitment to the well-being of Cambodia’s workforce. By addressing malnutrition among garment workers, we are investing in the health, productivity, and future prosperity of our people, which is essential for sustainable national development.”

WFP will work with partners including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World Health Organization (WHO), and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), alongside government institutions and private sector stakeholders, to ensure coordinated and sustainable implementation.

Phnom Penh is a city defined by movement and momentum. Along the rivers that shape Cambodia’s capital, historic temples and colonial façades stand alongside new architectural landmarks, reflecting a destination that continues to evolve while holding onto its cultural roots.

Within this changing skyline, Citadines Flatiron Phnom Penh offers a contemporary urban retreat designed for travelers who value flexibility and connection. Located within the striking Flatiron development, the serviced residence reflects a modern lifestyle where guests can seamlessly live, work, and play in the heart of the Cambodian capital.

Citadines Flatiron Phnom Penh | Facade
