Phnom Penh: Cambodian artist Prom Ponleu is presenting his latest solo exhibition, showcasing more than 70 paintings on canvas and hand-painted vases that explore themes of memory, cultural heritage, distance, and belonging at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra.
Titled “Reflections of My Father (Land)”, the exhibition is a deeply personal collection inspired by the loss of Ponleu’s father during his childhood and the recent unexpected passing of his young son, Charlie. The exhibition also reflects a promise the artist made to his late son, transforming personal grief into artistic expression.
Curated by Nat Di Maggio of Tribe Art Cambodia, the exhibition offers visitors an intimate journey through Ponleu’s emotions, memories, and connection to his roots. A strong appreciation for nature, Cambodia’s countryside, and the Khmer people is woven throughout the collection, highlighting the artist’s enduring bond with his homeland and cultural identity.
Originally from Siem Reap Province, Ponleu developed a passion for art at a young age despite having limited opportunities for formal training. He later attended evening classes at the Colours of Cambodia art school in Siem Reap and began his career as an art teacher in 2015. The exhibition is open to the public daily, free of charge, until September at The Gallery of Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra, inviting visitors to experience a moving collection that celebrates memory, resilience, and the enduring power of art.
