Flying Higher Art Exhibition @ the Plantation – Urban Resort & Spa

Phnom Penh: Saturday, 16th of March 2019, The pieces in Chhan Dina’s latest exhibition are in striking contrast to her previous work. She has been working in Chinese ink, almost monochrome, but still using her characteristic themes – birds and the natural world as a metaphor and illustration of human life. Her paintings are known to include tantalising hidden details of the realistic within the apparent abstraction.

Responding to a challenge by the 4th Kunming Art Biennale to try her hand at using traditional Chinese materials, She has brought her personal approach to this technique. Two of the pieces have already been shown in China.

Along with Dina’s creations, some 20 paintings by her art students from Simphony Music and Art school will be on display, showing their own observation of birds. “Use your own imagination!” is their mantra. “You don’t have to become an artist, but you learn much about yourself and the world by trying” she tells them.

Chhan Dina was born in 1984 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Dina received tutelage and guidance from the American artist Ronald Reimann. She works with a range of media, including painting and sculpture. She has exhibited work in Cambodia, France, Singapore and the USA. Dina was the only female Cambodian artist to partake in the United Nations mine action program in Cambodia, addressing the explosive remnants of war, her sophisticated sculpture is a permanent art piece on display at the United Nation headquarters. She has toured Vietnam and Thailand representing Cambodian artists at conferences and workshops. Dina’s recent work and teaching has focused on aspects of nature and wildlife in Cambodia, with her own paintings taking a close look at birds.
